ORANGEBURG, S.C. — What began as a night of joy, tradition, and celebration at South Carolina State University’s Homecoming ended in unspeakable tragedy with the death of Jaliyah Butler, a young woman whose life was cut short by senseless gun violence.
The annual homecoming festivities, marked by parades, tailgating, and the pride of a Bulldog victory, turned into a scene of fear and heartbreak when gunfire erupted in the crowd, leaving Jaliyah fatally wounded and another individual injured.
Authorities confirmed that Jaliyah, who was not a student at SC State, was attending the event as a guest alongside friends. She came to experience the camaraderie and community spirit of homecoming — a celebration meant to unite — but instead became the innocent victim of a devastating act of violence.
On Saturday, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced the arrest of 18-year-old Matthew Daniel McCoy in connection with the shooting. McCoy faces charges of Pointing and Presenting a Firearm at a Person and Carrying a Weapon on School Property.
According to arrest warrants, investigators believe McCoy retrieved a loaded Glock handgun from his vehicle after witnessing a fight between two groups on campus. He allegedly fired into the crowd, striking Jaliyah and igniting panic among hundreds of attendees.
Jaliyah’s family and friends are left heartbroken, struggling to comprehend the loss of a young woman described as radiant, kind, and full of life. Known for her compassion and joyful spirit, she touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her smile, laughter, and humility are what loved ones say will remain etched in their hearts forever.
The Orangeburg community, along with the SC State University family, has rallied in grief and remembrance. Vigils and prayer services are being organized to honor Jaliyah’s memory, even as the community grapples with the painful reminder of how quickly gun violence can destroy lives.
“This is not just a tragedy for Jaliyah’s family,” one community member shared, “but for all of us who believe in the sanctity of life and the need for peace on our campuses and in our neighborhoods.”
As investigators work toward justice, those mourning Jaliyah’s loss are determined to ensure her light is never forgotten. Her life, though cut short, is being remembered as one filled with love, joy, and an unwavering kindness that will continue to inspire.
May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her loved ones find strength in the outpouring of love and support during this unimaginable time.
