Authorities in Belleville are investigating the death of Shawn R. Overmiller, a 40-year-old resident whose body was discovered early Wednesday morning along a local roadway.
According to the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office, Overmiller was found deceased on March 18, 2026, after emergency crews responded to a report of an unconscious man lying on the side of the road near Illinois Route 161 and Sullivan Drive.
First responders, including officers and EMS personnel, were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:22 a.m. Upon arrival, they located Overmiller and attempted to assess his condition. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say the exact cause and manner of death remain unknown. The coroner’s office has ordered both an autopsy and toxicology testing to help determine what led to the tragic incident.
The Belleville Police Department has launched an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Overmiller’s death. Detectives and members of the department’s Crime Scene Unit have been collecting evidence and interviewing potential witnesses as they work to piece together what occurred during the early morning hours.
During the initial response, investigators also established a perimeter around the backyard area of a nearby apartment complex using crime scene tape, indicating that authorities are examining a broader area connected to the case.
The investigation comes during a troubling week for the Belleville community, marking the third death investigation in just days. Earlier incidents included a fatal stabbing and a shooting reported on March 15. However, police say there is currently no evidence linking those cases to Overmiller’s death.
