Eric Richins Obituary:Utah Woman Found Guilty of Killing Husband With Fentanyl-Laced Drink in Shocking Murder Plot

A Utah jury has found Kouri Richins guilty of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, in a case that has stunned the community and drawn national attention.

The verdict was delivered Monday at the Summit County Courthouse after jurors deliberated for just three hours following nearly two weeks of testimony. The jury of six men and six women convicted the 35-year-old mother of three on five felony counts, including aggravated murder, aggravated attempted murder, insurance fraud, and forgery.

Prosecutors said Richins fatally poisoned her 39-year-old husband with a fentanyl-laced Moscow Mule cocktail as part of a plan to move forward with a new life while gaining access to his $4 million estate.

During the reading of the verdict, Richins appeared visibly shaken in the courtroom. Witnesses said she gasped and lowered her head as Judge Richard Mrazik announced the first conviction for aggravated murder. She remained bowed as the remaining guilty verdicts were read aloud.

Eric Richins’ family, who attended the trial daily, grew emotional as the decision was announced. His sister Amy was seen quietly wiping away tears while relatives embraced one another for comfort in the courtroom.

The case unfolded over 13 days of testimony that detailed the circumstances surrounding Eric Richins’ death, including allegations of financial disputes, family tensions, and an earlier attempted poisoning. Investigators also examined the defendant’s actions following the death, which prosecutors argued were part of a broader plan tied to financial gain.

Richins now faces the possibility of life in prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for May 13 — a date that would have marked Eric Richins’ 44th birthday.

For Eric’s loved ones, the verdict brings a measure of justice, though the loss of a father, son, and friend continues to weigh heavily on those who knew and loved him.
