Waverly Community Mourns the Tragic Loss of Motorcyclist David Durham, 35

WAVERLY, Iowa — The Waverly community is grieving the tragic death of David Durham, a 35-year-old motorcyclist who lost his life following a devastating crash Saturday morning on a rural stretch of Waverly Road in Polk County.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Durham was traveling westbound on Waverly Road late Saturday morning when the collision occurred near the intersection of Waverly Road and Hodge Street. Investigators said Durham was riding at a speed believed to be above the posted 35-mile-per-hour limit as he approached the intersection.

At the same time, a woman driving a Toyota Highlander was traveling eastbound and attempting to turn onto Hodge Street. Deputies reported that the SUV crossed into Durham’s path, resulting in a collision between the vehicle and the motorcycle. The force of the impact ejected Durham from his bike.

Witnesses told authorities that Durham was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Bystanders immediately rushed to help, performing CPR and other life-saving efforts until emergency responders arrived. Durham was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander and two passengers were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. All were wearing seat belts, and none of their injuries were considered life-threatening, according to officials.

The crash led to an extended investigation as deputies documented the scene, gathered evidence, and interviewed witnesses. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to review statements and any available traffic or video data. The name of the SUV driver has not been released.

As the community mourns Durham’s passing, authorities are once again urging both motorcyclists and drivers to exercise caution on the roads. Officials emphasized the importance of wearing protective gear, obeying speed limits, and remaining vigilant at intersections, where many serious crashes occur.

Durham’s family has been notified, and an outpouring of condolences has followed as friends, loved ones, and community members remember a life lost far too soon.
