Philadelphia Sports Community Mourns Carl E. Henderson, Beloved Collector and Voice of the Fans, Dead at 69

The Pennsylvania sports community is reeling from the sudden loss of Carl E. Henderson, a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, respected collector, and the heart behind Carl’s Cards & Collectables. Henderson passed away on January 31, 2026, at the age of 69, leaving behind decades of memories, friendships, and an irreplaceable legacy within the city’s sports culture.

For more than three decades, Carl’s shop in Havertown—just minutes from countless longtime patrons’ homes—was far more than a retail space. It was a gathering place, a living archive of Philadelphia sports history, and a welcoming hub where fans could meet the athletes and media figures they admired. Hundreds of Philadelphia and international sports figures passed through his doors for autograph signings and fan events, all made possible by Carl’s passion and generosity.

Henderson was also the host of the weekly hour-long video podcast “This Fan’s View,” where he brought fans closer to the stories behind the games. In February 2019, one such episode featured a guest reflecting on a half-century career in professional hockey media—an experience remembered as one of the great joys of knowing Carl and sharing in his love for sports storytelling.

Friends recall seeing Carl most recently just before Christmas at his Havertown shop, where he hosted noted Flyers writer Sam Carchidi alongside Stanley Cup–era Flyers defenseman Bob “Hound” Kelly during a signing for Carchidi’s book Bullies. Even in his final days, Carl remained active and engaged, regularly connecting with friends and fans through social media—his last Facebook “like” appearing just a day before his passing.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the region, honoring a man who embodied the spirit of Philadelphia fandom: loyal, passionate, and deeply human. Carl Henderson will be remembered not only by close friends, but by the thousands of fans who walked through his doors, shared stories at his counter, and felt instantly at home in his presence.

He leaves behind a void that cannot be filled and a legacy that will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Carl. There truly will never be another one like you.
