An off-duty Nassau County police officer was killed in a devastating traffic crash near the Smith Haven Mall, a loss that has shaken law enforcement and the broader Long Island community. Officer Patricia Espinosa, 42, died after her vehicle was struck by a driver police say ran a red light while allegedly intoxicated.

According to Suffolk County police and the Police Benevolent Association, Espinosa was traveling when a vehicle driven by Matthew Smith of Hauppauge entered the intersection against a red light and collided with her car. Espinosa was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities said a 20-year-old Hauppauge man was charged with driving while intoxicated following the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
