Affectionately known as “MJ,” Dr. Johnson was more than a physician—he was a trusted friend, a source of comfort, and a bright light to the children and families he cared for.

Colleagues and patients alike recall his quick wit and ability to put even the most nervous child at ease. He had a rare gift for turning ordinary appointments into moments of joy, whether through a perfectly timed one-liner or a playful joke that melted away anxiety.

One cherished story captures his spirit well: on a BYU–Utah football game day, Dr. Johnson—an enthusiastic Utes fan—entered a room with a teenage BYU supporter. Holding two syringes, one tiny needle filled with red fluid and the other an oversized one filled with blue, he asked with a straight face which “vaccine” the teen preferred. Laughter followed, and as colleagues fondly recall, “there were more Utes fans walking out of the office than walking in.”

That was the essence of Dr. Johnson—someone who used humor to build trust, kindness to reassure, and his heart to make every family feel seen and cared for.

He was adored by his patients, deeply appreciated by their families, and respected by his fellow physicians and staff. His legacy of compassion, humor, and dedication to children’s health will live on in the many lives he touched.
