Amarillo Mourns the Loss of Mathes “Max” Tillinghast, 30

AMARILLO, TX — The Amarillo community is grieving the untimely passing of Mathes “Max” Anthony Tillinghast, age 30, who died on November 11, 2025. Known for his larger-than-life personality and even bigger heart, Max will be remembered as a man whose kindness, strength, and warmth touched everyone he met.

Born on November 15, 1994, in Houston, Texas, to Lonnie and Toinette Tillinghast, Max made a memorable entrance into the world, weighing 11 pounds at birth — earning him the nickname that would stay with him for life. To friends and family, “Max” wasn’t just short for Mathes — it perfectly captured his maximal spirit, generosity, and love of life.

A 2013 graduate of Lovejoy High School, Max went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas, where he was a proud member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. His intelligence, drive, and curiosity led him to a fulfilling career that allowed him to travel — something he cherished deeply.

Those closest to Max describe him as a man of great character — hardworking, loyal, and full of life. His infectious humor, adventurous soul, and gentle nature made him someone everyone wanted to be around. He loved sports, fitness, and anything outdoors, but above all, he loved his family fiercely. His time spent living in Ketchikan, Alaska, was among the happiest chapters of his life, filled with exploration, friendship, and purpose.

“Max had an incredible work ethic,” his loved ones shared. “He was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. He was a gentle giant, with the wittiest sense of humor and a heart of gold.”

Max is survived by his loving parents, Lonnie and Toinette Tillinghast; siblings Sam Tillinghast (and fiancée Ashley Fahey), Gabby Tillinghast (and fiancé Sam Rich), and Gracie Tillinghast; and his grandparents Soeurette and Bob Cowan, and Jack and Theresa Tillinghast. He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Portia Tillinghast.

A visitation will be held Friday, November 14, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd. The funeral service will take place Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, followed by interment at Llano Cemetery.
