Brooklyn Democratic Party Mourns the Passing of Hon. Babatunde Akowe, Esteemed Civil Court Justice


Brooklyn, NY — The Brooklyn Democratic Party is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Hon. Babatunde Akowe, Justice of the New York City Civil Court in Kings County’s 2nd Municipal Court District. Judge Akowe, who was elected to the bench in November 2023, had only recently begun his 10-year term in January 2025. His life and promising judicial career were tragically cut short.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Judge Akowe was a proud son of the borough he so passionately served. His career reflected a lifelong commitment to justice, public service, and the people of New York City. From his early days at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office to his roles within the New York State Unified Court System, New York City Council, Department of Corrections, NYC Employees’ Retirement System, New York State Governor’s Office, and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, Judge Akowe’s contributions to government and civic life were both wide-ranging and deeply impactful.
Colleagues and community members remember Judge Akowe as a leader of integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication. His calm presence and steadfast belief in fairness earned him respect across the legal and political communities.
“Judge Akowe’s passing is a tremendous loss for Brooklyn and for all of New York City,” the Brooklyn Democratic Party said in a statement. “We honor his legacy of service and his lifelong commitment to uplifting the communities he loved.”
Judge Akowe is survived by his wife and two daughters, who remain in the thoughts and prayers of all who knew him. As Brooklyn mourns this heartbreaking loss, the community takes solace in the enduring impact of his work, his leadership, and his love for the city he called home.
