GRAVENHURST, Ontario — The Muskoka region is mourning the loss of Alex Tilley, the iconic entrepreneur, outdoorsman, and founder of Tilley Endurables, whose products became synonymous with exploration, adventure, and a life lived under open skies. Tilley passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy that spans continents and generations.
The Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre shared heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, recalling Tilley not only as a visionary business leader, but also as a warm supporter of the region’s history, waterways, and heritage vessels. Known for his curiosity, kindness, and unmistakable enthusiasm for life, Tilley was a frequent supporter and advocate of the steamships, taking delight in preserving the traditions and spirit of Muskoka.
“Alex was more than an entrepreneur — he was a true explorer,” the organization shared. “Whether traveling the world or enjoying the decks of the RMS Segwun, he brought energy, joy, and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and history. His support and enthusiasm meant so much to us, and to so many others.”
Founded in 1980, Tilley Endurables was born out of Tilley’s pursuit to create a hat durable enough for sailing — a simple invention that grew into one of Canada’s most recognized outdoor brands. His products became a symbol of resilience, adventure, and authenticity, mirroring the spirit and values he embodied every day.
Beyond business, Tilley was known for his generosity and commitment to conservation, culture, and community. He championed environmental causes, celebrated exploration, and encouraged others to step into nature with curiosity instead of fear.
In honoring his memory, Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre shared cherished photographs of Tilley aboard the RMS Segwun in recent years — images capturing his warm smile, his love for the outdoors, and his appreciation for the lakes that inspired so many of his travels.
Alex Tilley leaves behind a beloved family, countless friends, admirers across Canada and abroad, and a legacy stitched into the fabric of adventurous life.
He will be missed, remembered, and celebrated — every time a traveler steps into the sun wearing a well-worn Tilley hat.
