CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla.— The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and the Crystal River community are mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Deputy Marcial Rodriguez, a longtime deputy and beloved school resource officer who passed away unexpectedly on Friday evening, October 24, immediately after completing his shift.
The Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed the cause of death, but the impact of Deputy Rodriguez’s passing has been deeply felt across the department and community.
Rodriguez joined CCSO in August 2000, dedicating more than two decades of his life to public service. During his career, he served in multiple capacities — from community crimes and domestic violence investigations to crisis negotiation and the bomb squad. In recent years, he found his calling as a school resource officer at Crystal River High School, where he became a trusted mentor and friend to countless students.
The Sheriff’s Office shared that Rodriguez received letters of gratitude from students over the years, many of whom credited him for his kindness and guidance. “You have helped me through a lot of hard life situations,” one former student wrote. “You are a good dude and willing to help anyone at any time.”
Sheriff David Vincent reflected on the loss, saying, “Marcial was more than just an officer; he was a trusted mentor for countless young people, a beloved member of our family, and a friend. His legacy is one of professionalism and kindness — a true testament to his character and compassion, even in the most trying times. As we grieve, we stand united in honoring his legacy while supporting his family with the love and respect they deserve.”
Deputy Rodriguez leaves behind his wife and two sons, as well as a department and community forever changed by his warmth, humor, and dedication.
Funeral and memorial service details will be released as they become available, the Sheriff’s Office said.
As the community grieves, the halls of Crystal River High School — once filled with Deputy Rodriguez’s steady presence and uplifting spirit — will stand as a reminder of the countless lives he touched and the legacy of service he leaves behind. 🕊️💙
