BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. – The Blount County community is mourning the loss of former Sheriff Loyd Arrington, a respected leader and devoted public servant who dedicated much of his life to protecting and serving the people of Alabama. Sheriff Arrington, who led the Blount County Sheriff’s Office for ten years, is remembered for his steadfast integrity, compassion, and commitment to justice.
Current Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon announced Arrington’s passing, paying tribute to the man who shaped not only the Sheriff’s Office but also countless lives through his mentorship and example.
“Sheriff Arrington came into office early in my law enforcement career,” Sheriff Moon shared. “As a young deputy with little experience, I didn’t know what to expect when a new sheriff takes over. It wasn’t until I became a narcotics investigator that I really got to know him on a deeper level than just ‘boss.’ What I found was his unwavering love for his wife, his family, his country, and Blount County.”
At his retirement ceremony, Arrington humbly told the crowd, “I really fooled all of you because I love this so much, I would’ve done this for free.” Those words, Sheriff Moon said, captured the essence of a man who viewed law enforcement as a calling, not just a career.
When Arrington decided not to seek re-election, Moon felt inspired to step forward and continue his predecessor’s legacy. “When I got elected and became Sheriff-Elect, Sheriff Arrington took me under his wing and really poured into me the importance of dignity, honor, and integrity that is expected from the office of Sheriff,” Moon said.
Reflecting on his mentor’s influence, Moon added, “I will always consider Sheriff Arrington a great mentor and will never forget the many lessons I learned from his leadership. Thank you, Sheriff Arrington, for all your service to this country and to Blount County. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten.”
He concluded with a heartfelt message: “Enjoy your eternal reward resting comfortably in the arms of Jesus, where there is no more sorrow, no more pain, and no more death. You will always have a special place not only in my heart but in the hearts of so many here at the Blount County Sheriff’s Office and across Blount County.”
