MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT — The Middlebury College community is in mourning following the tragic death of Lia Smith, a beloved student whose body was discovered near campus on Thursday. In a press release issued by the Vermont State Police, officials confirmed Lia’s identity and stated that no foul play is suspected.
In an emotional message to students, faculty, and families, Middlebury College President Ian Baucom expressed his profound sorrow and shared condolences with Lia’s family. “This is a profound loss that nobody should have to endure,” he wrote. “As president, and far more as a fellow parent, I ache for them.”
Lia Smith, originally from Woodside, California, was known for her intellectual curiosity, compassion, and advocacy. A double major in computer science and statistics, she was also a member of the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, as well as the Chess and Japanese clubs. Friends and classmates described her as bright, thoughtful, and courageous, particularly in her advocacy for transgender rights and inclusion across campus.
President Baucom praised the efforts of Student Affairs staff, Public Safety, and local law enforcement, including the Middlebury Police Department and Vermont State Police, who worked tirelessly throughout the search. “I am profoundly grateful to our Public Safety team who poured their hearts into the search for Lia,” he noted.
As the community grapples with this devastating loss, Middlebury College plans to hold memorial gatherings in the coming days to celebrate Lia’s life and offer space for collective mourning.
“She was a gift to us,” President Baucom wrote, “and we are so grateful that she was—and will always remain—a member of our Middlebury family.”
Resources for grief counseling and emotional support have been made available to students, faculty, and staff through the college’s wellness and mental health services.
