Community Grieves the Sudden Loss of McMinn County Director of Schools, Dr. Julie Goodin


ATHENS, TN — The McMinn County community is mourning the heartbreaking and unexpected passing of Dr. Julie Goodin, Director of Schools, whose leadership, compassion, and vision have left an enduring mark on the district she so passionately served.
Dr. Goodin assumed the role of Director of Schools in July 2025, following a distinguished career in education that included numerous leadership positions. Known for her unwavering dedication to students, staff, and families, she was a respected and inspirational figure whose work profoundly strengthened McMinn County Schools.
“Dr. Goodin was an incredibly talented and driven leader who cared deeply about our students, staff, and families,” said Assistant Director of Schools Melasawn Knight in a statement to staff and families. “Her vision and dedication have left a lasting impact on our community. She will be dearly missed.”
The district has announced that all schools and the district office will be closed on Friday, October 24th, allowing time for staff and students to grieve and come together in remembrance. The day will serve as an optional professional development day, with counseling and support services made available for those in need.

Dr. Goodin’s colleagues remember her as a steadfast advocate for education and a compassionate mentor who inspired everyone she worked with. Her legacy will live on in the teachers she empowered, the programs she built, and the countless students whose lives she touched.
As the community comes to terms with this tremendous loss, the McMinn County School System asks for continued thoughts and prayers for Dr. Goodin’s family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.
