Off-Duty NYPD Officer Shoots Suspect During Alleged Robbery Attempt

QUINCY, Ill. — Heartbreak has swept through Adams County after authorities confirmed the identity of a young man who tragically drowned in the Mississippi River on Tuesday night.

Adams County Coroner Scott Graham announced on Wednesday that the victim was 25-year-old Parker James David Warning, of Mendon, Illinois.

Timeline of the Incident

According to officials, the tragedy began on the evening of August 19, 2025, when Missouri authorities received a distress call reporting that a man had fallen overboard and disappeared beneath the river’s surface. Adams County deputies and the Quincy Police Department quickly joined the search effort, working alongside water rescue crews who deployed boats and equipment from the Quincy Memorial Bridge to Hogback Island.

Rescuers searched tirelessly throughout the night, but despite their urgent efforts, the recovery confirmed the worst fears. Warning’s life was lost to the unforgiving waters of the Mississippi.

Community and Official Response

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Warning’s death, while the coroner’s office is reviewing evidence to piece together what happened in the moments leading up to the fall.

“This is a devastating loss for Parker’s family and for our entire community,” Coroner Graham said, offering condolences. “Losing someone so young is a tragedy no words can ease.”

Officials noted that while accidents on the Mississippi are not uncommon, each one underscores the critical importance of boating safety, life jackets, and heightened awareness when navigating the strong currents of the river.

A Community in Mourning

Warning’s death has left Mendon and the surrounding Quincy area reeling. Friends and family describe him as a vibrant, kind-hearted young man whose smile and energy touched everyone who knew him. His sudden passing has sparked an outpouring of grief, with community members already rallying around the Warning family to provide comfort during this unimaginable time.

“Parker was the kind of person who lit up every room he walked into,” one friend shared. “He had so much life ahead of him. It’s just so hard to believe he’s gone.”

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet released details on whether Warning was wearing a life jacket or what may have caused him to fall from the boat. Investigators emphasize that their inquiry remains active and that further updates will be provided when available.

For now, the river tragedy stands as a sobering reminder of both the beauty and danger of the Mississippi, and of how quickly life can change in a single moment.
