TULSA, OK — A devastating tragedy unfolded Tuesday morning at the Tulsa Boys’ Home, leaving a 17-year-old boy dead and an entire community in mourning. Authorities confirmed that the teen took an off-duty officer’s firearm during an archery class and fatally shot himself before staff or other teens could intervene.
According to Tulsa Police, the off-duty officer — who was present as part of a scheduled class activity — had his service weapon secured nearby when the incident occurred. The teenager reportedly gained access to the gun and fired a single shot, resulting in his death. Despite immediate efforts from staff and emergency responders, the young man could not be saved.
Officials say the officer, who has been placed on administrative leave, is devastated by the incident. Tulsa Boys’ Home staff, who have long been recognized for their compassionate work with at-risk youth, are also reeling from the shock and heartbreak.
“This is a tragedy beyond words,” a spokesperson for the Tulsa Boys’ Home shared. “Our hearts are shattered for this young man and for everyone affected. We are focusing on supporting our residents and staff as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”
Counselors and trauma response teams have been made available to residents and employees as they process the events of the morning. Law enforcement officials are conducting a full investigation to determine exactly how the firearm was accessed and whether safety protocols were followed.
The Tulsa Boys’ Home, founded more than a century ago, serves as a refuge for young men seeking stability, guidance, and hope. The tragedy has struck at the heart of an institution dedicated to healing — leaving staff, families, and the wider community grappling with grief and questions about how such an incident could occur.
Community members and local leaders have expressed condolences and called for continued support for both the officer and the boys impacted by the tragedy.
“This is every parent’s and every mentor’s worst nightmare,” one Tulsa resident said. “We’re praying for the boy’s family, for the officer, and for everyone at the Boys’ Home who loved and cared for him.”
Authorities have not released the teen’s identity out of respect for his family’s privacy.
