Tragic 10 Freeway Pileup Claims 3 Lives in Ontario — 21-Year-Old Truck Driver Arrested for Suspected DUI

Ontario, CA – A devastating multi-vehicle collision on the 10 Freeway in Ontario has left three people dead and several others injured after a fiery crash involving at least eight vehicles — including four semi-trucks — brought traffic to a standstill and sent shockwaves through the Southern California community.
The deadly crash occurred just after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes near the Archibald Avenue exit. According to California Highway Patrol, a 21-year-old truck driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. His name has not yet been publicly released.
Dashcam footage circulating online shows the chilling moment a speeding semi-truck barreled into slowing traffic, igniting a chain-reaction collision that engulfed several vehicles in flames and left mangled wreckage scattered across multiple lanes. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky as terrified drivers scrambled to safety.
“It was like an explosion — metal flying everywhere, cars bursting into flames,” said witness Raul Hernandez, who narrowly avoided the crash. “It’s something I’ll never forget.”
First responders arrived within minutes and battled intense flames as they worked to extract victims from the wreckage. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of family.
Several others sustained moderate to serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. Authorities have not confirmed how many were hospitalized but say the toll could rise.
CHP officials say early evidence points to reckless driving and impairment as possible factors. The 21-year-old truck driver is being held on suspicion of DUI involving narcotics and vehicular manslaughter. Toxicology reports are pending.
“This was a catastrophic crash with heartbreaking consequences,” said CHP Officer Alejandro Ramirez. “We are actively investigating what led up to this tragedy and will hold those responsible accountable.”
The eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway were closed for more than 10 hours overnight as crews cleared the wreckage and investigators reconstructed the scene. Traffic remained heavily impacted well into Wednesday morning.
As the investigation continues, the community is left mourning lives lost in a crash that many say could have been prevented.
“This should never have happened,” said Ontario resident Denise Clarke, who arrived at the scene minutes after the crash. “Three people are never going home to their families because someone made a selfish and reckless choice.”
A memorial of flowers and candles began forming near the freeway overpass late Tuesday night, as loved ones and strangers alike paused to reflect on the fragility of life and the deep cost of impaired driving.
