Cyclist Killed, Two Others Critically Injured in Tragic DUI Crash on Pacific Coast Highway

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — A morning bike ride turned into a heartbreaking tragedy Monday after a 43-year-old driver struck three cyclists along Pacific Coast Highway, killing one and critically injuring two others, according to Huntington Beach Police.

Authorities say the crash occurred just after 6:45 a.m. near Newland Street, when the driver — identified as Amber Calderon of Long Beach — plowed into a group of cyclists before fleeing the scene. Officers located and arrested Calderon roughly half a mile away, where her vehicle had come to a stop.

Police say Calderon was taken into custody on multiple felony charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI, hit-and-run, and possession of narcotics.

Despite immediate efforts from witnesses and first responders, one cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

By mid-morning, investigators remained at the site, their work stretching across several lanes of Pacific Coast Highway as evidence markers dotted the pavement — a haunting reminder of the lives forever changed in an instant.

“This is a devastating and completely preventable tragedy,” said a police spokesperson. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the entire cycling community.”

The deadly crash has once again renewed concerns about road safety and the vulnerability of cyclists along Southern California’s coastal routes.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information is urged to contact the Huntington Beach Police Department’s Traffic Bureau.

As the sun rose over the Pacific Monday morning, what should have been a peaceful ride by the ocean turned into a scene of heartbreak — another reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike on the open road.
