SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Sewanee football community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Matthew Burrows, a dedicated student-athlete, teammate, and friend whose passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew him.

A letterman and standout member of the Sewanee Tigers, Matthew was remembered by Coach McCollum and teammates as a player who embodied everything the program stands for — passion, integrity, and selflessness. “Matthew was the epitome of a good teammate,” Coach McCollum shared, “and to me, that’s the highest compliment a student-athlete can earn.”

Matthew’s impact on the field and within the Sewanee community extended far beyond the scoreboard. Known for his infectious energy, humor, and unwavering work ethic, he approached every practice and game with heart. His teammates recall him as a leader who lifted spirits, pushed others to be their best, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand.

A member of Coach McCollum’s 2023 and 2024 teams, Matthew earned 2024 SAA Academic All-Conference honors — a testament to his dedication both on the field and in the classroom. This past winter, he was presented with the Coach’s Award for his exceptional service and commitment to his team, a reflection of the deep respect and admiration he earned throughout his time at Sewanee.

“Matthew gave everything he had for his team,” one teammate shared. “He wasn’t just a player — he was our brother.”

In tribute to his memory and the mark he left on the program, Sewanee players will honor Matthew during today’s game by wearing his initials, “MB,” on their helmets — a powerful reminder of his enduring presence among them.
