Edmonton, AB —
The University of Alberta and the broader Alberta community are grieving the loss of Bruce Saville, a visionary entrepreneur, philanthropist, and tireless advocate for sport, education, and community building. Saville’s connection to the University of Alberta ran deep. His leadership and generosity helped bring to life the Saville Community Sports Centre, a flagship facility that has become a cornerstone for university athletics, community recreation, and elite training.

Under his vision, the centre opened in 2004 and has since welcomed more than two million visitors.

Over the years, the Saville Centre has evolved into one of Canada’s premier multi-sport complexes — home to the Golden Bears and Pandas programs in curling, basketball, volleyball, and tennis — as well as being designated a national training centre in multiple disciplines.

In 2023, Saville played a key role in the creation of the Saville Tennis Centre, expanding access to world-class tennis facilities for both the university and the public.

Beyond his impact on campus, Bruce Saville’s influence extended across Alberta. He founded Saville Systems, a technology company that grew to employ over 1,700 people before its eventual sale, and later devoted much of his time to philanthropic work in his home city of Edmonton.

He served as a U of A governor, chaired major charitable boards, and was recognized with an honorary degree in 2015.

University President Bill Flanagan expressed deep sorrow at Saville’s passing, calling him someone who “helped transform sport and recreation at the University of Alberta and across our city. The Saville Community Sports Centre stands as a lasting testament to his belief in the power of sport to bring people together, strengthen community and inspire excellence.”

As the university prepares tributes and memorial events, many already reflect on the void his absence will leave. For students, athletes, staff, and community members alike, Saville’s commitment to creating spaces where people could thrive through sport, connection, and collaboration will remain a powerful legacy.
The University of Alberta extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his vision, leadership, and unshakeable dedication to his community
