Heartbreak in Heidelberg: Community Mourns the Loss of Three Young Lives — Christopher Newell, Mikea McCray, and Cayus Stevens

HEIDELBERG, MISSISSIPPI — What began as a night of celebration turned into tragedy when gunfire shattered the joy of Heidelberg High School’s homecoming game on October 10, 2025, leaving three young lives lost far too soon. The victims — Christopher Newell, Mikea McCray, and Cayus Stevens — were beloved members of the Heidelberg community, whose sudden and senseless deaths have left family, friends, and neighbors reeling in sorrow.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred during the height of the homecoming festivities, transforming a moment of unity into one of chaos and grief. Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White expressed the heartbreak shared by many, saying, “We are devastated by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Christopher, Mikea, and Cayus. This community is hurting deeply, and we ask for continued prayers and strength for everyone affected.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) and local law enforcement have confirmed multiple arrests in connection with the case. Those charged include Tylar Goodloe, 18, who faces two counts of capital murder and possession of a deadly weapon on an educational property; Jabari Collins, 19, charged with possession of a deadly weapon on school grounds; and Jadarius Page, 19, and Damarin Starks, 19, both facing accessory and evidence-tampering charges. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek full accountability for this senseless act of violence.
In response to the tragedy, the West Jasper School District announced the cancellation of Heidelberg High’s upcoming football game, citing safety concerns and allowing the community time to grieve. The decision, though difficult, underscores the profound emotional toll this event has taken on students, faculty, and families alike.
Each of the victims leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and promise.
Christopher Newell was known for his gentle spirit and big heart — a friend to many and a young man who brought light wherever he went.
Mikea McCray was remembered as bright, kind, and full of potential, with a smile that could lift anyone’s spirits.
Cayus Stevens was admired for his energy, optimism, and the joy he brought into the lives of friends and family.
Their names now echo through Heidelberg not in celebration of a victory on the field, but in remembrance of lives taken too soon. Candlelight vigils, prayer gatherings, and memorials have brought residents together in unity — a testament to the strength of a town determined to heal while never forgetting.
“These kids were our future,” one community member said tearfully. “They were loved, they were full of dreams, and they didn’t deserve this. We will keep their memories alive — always.”
As Heidelberg grieves, the community leans on faith and one another for comfort. The pain is immeasurable, but so is the love — a love that will carry the memories of Christopher, Mikea, and Cayus forward, reminding everyone of the light they brought into the world.
May they rest in eternal peace, and may their families find strength in the embrace of a community united in grief, remembrance, and love.
