TULSA, Okla. — Heartbreak and disbelief now hang heavy over North Tulsa after a violent Tuesday evening left one young man dead, another fighting for his life, and an entire community mourning the loss of innocence.
The Tulsa Police Department confirmed officers responded to a shooting just after 6:30 p.m. in the 5200 block of North Johnstown Avenue, a normally quiet neighborhood where families often gather outside to talk, laugh, and watch children play. That peace was shattered when gunfire erupted, claiming the life of an 18-year-old man and critically injuring a 14-year-old boy.
Despite officers’ immediate response and first responders’ life-saving efforts, the older victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The younger victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Police have not yet released their names, pending notification of family.
As investigators worked into the night, crime scene tape stretched across the block — a painful symbol of another act of senseless violence. Detectives combed the area for evidence, carefully collecting bullet casings and reviewing surveillance footage in search of answers.
“This is a devastating situation — two kids caught in something that should never have happened,” said Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg. “We owe it to their families and this community to find whoever is responsible and bring them to justice.”
Neighbors described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking, with sirens echoing through the area and families rushing outside in fear and disbelief. By nightfall, small groups of residents gathered near the scene, many holding candles or whispering prayers.
“They were just kids,” said Cynthia Hayes, a longtime resident of the neighborhood. “We’re tired of burying our young people. This has to stop.”
Police say the suspect remains at large, and investigators have not yet released a description or motive. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward — no matter how small it may seem — by contacting Tulsa Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
The tragedy has once again reignited conversations about youth violence and community safety in Tulsa, where residents and leaders alike are pleading for unity and change.
“We cannot continue losing our children to gunfire,” said Councilwoman Vanessa Hall-Harper, who represents the area. “This community deserves healing, and our young people deserve a future.”
As the city grieves the loss of a life taken too soon and prays for the recovery of another still fighting to live, one truth remains painfully clear: North Tulsa has endured yet another reminder of how fragile and precious life truly is.
