16-Year-Old Isaias Emanuel Carranza Named in Fatal Shooting Near Ben Lomond High School

OGDEN, Utah — A deep sadness has fallen over the city of Ogden after police identified 16-year-old Isaias Emanuel Carranza as the suspect in a fatal shooting near Ben Lomond High School earlier this week — a tragedy that has left an entire community in grief, fear, and disbelief.
According to the Ogden Police Department, the shooting unfolded near the high school campus during what investigators believe was a confrontation involving multiple juveniles. When officers arrived, they found a teenage boy suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite desperate life-saving efforts, the young victim died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Police announced Thursday that Carranza has been identified as the primary suspect and remains at large. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information about his whereabouts, warning that he may be armed and should be considered dangerous.
“This tragedy has deeply affected our city,” said Ogden Police Chief Eric Young during a press briefing. “Our top priority is the safety of our residents and ensuring justice for the victim and their family.”
A Community in Mourning
The shooting has shaken Ben Lomond High School to its core. Students, teachers, and parents are struggling to process the sudden loss of one of their own. Grief counselors have been made available as classmates gather to remember a young life taken too soon.
Dozens of students gathered near the site of the shooting Thursday afternoon, forming a quiet memorial of candles, flowers, and handwritten notes. Through tears, friends described the victim as kind, funny, and full of potential.
“Our children should be focused on learning, not fearing violence,” said Maria Lopez, a parent of a Ben Lomond student. “This breaks all of our hearts.”

Investigators continue to piece together what led to the shooting. While authorities have not disclosed a motive, they confirmed that both the victim and the suspect knew each other. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
If captured, Carranza could face serious felony charges, including murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Prosecutors have not yet determined whether he will be charged as an adult.
A Plea for Peace
In the aftermath of the tragedy, community leaders and parents are calling for stronger efforts to address youth violence, mental health, and conflict resolution.
“Every shooting leaves behind broken families and shattered dreams,” said Councilwoman Angela Chacon at a candlelight vigil. “We must come together to make sure no more young lives are lost.”
Ben Lomond High School Principal James Alverson echoed that sentiment in a statement Friday morning:
“This tragedy reminds us how fragile life is. We will honor our student’s memory by supporting one another and standing together as a community.”
As of Friday, Isaias Emanuel Carranza remains at large. Police continue their search while a heartbroken community waits for justice and healing.
Anyone with information about Carranza’s location is urged to contact the Ogden Police Department at (801) 395-8221 or submit an anonymous tip through Weber Area Crime Stoppers.
