Canoe Community Grieves Loss of 10-Year-Old Jayden Spicer

Canoe, KY — Heartbreak has touched Breathitt County as family, friends, and neighbors mourn the loss of 10-year-old Jayden Spicer, who passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Born October 4, 2014, at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, Jayden was a bright light in the lives of all who knew him. A student at Highland Turner Elementary School, he was eagerly preparing to enter the fourth grade this fall. Teachers and classmates remember him for his boundless energy, quick smile, and joyful spirit that seemed to fill every room he entered.

Jayden embraced life with wonder and enthusiasm. Whether battling it out in Fortnite or Roblox, pretending to be his hero Spider-Man, or spending long afternoons outside, he found joy in every moment. He loved riding the four-wheeler, jumping on the trampoline, tossing rocks into the creek, and playing any sport that brought friends and laughter — from soccer and basketball to baseball.

His life was shaped by the deep love of his family. He is survived by his aunts, Samantha Brunty and Chy Salyers; his uncle, Michael Hays; sisters, Mia and Aliyha Spicer; brothers, Hunter, River, and Fisher Gross; and a “like-a-grandmother,” Linda Salyers. He also leaves behind many cousins and friends who will carry his memory forward.

Jayden was preceded in death by his grandmother, Shirley Faye Johnson, who lovingly raised him until her passing in May of this year. The two shared a special bond, and many find comfort in imagining them reunited.

Though his time on earth was far too short, Jayden’s playful laughter, kind heart, and adventurous nature will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. His passing leaves a void no words can fill, but his love and light will continue to shine in the memories he left behind.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
