Phoenix Community Mourns Slain Honor Student Tyler Cardiel as Shooter Sentenced to 49 Years

The Phoenix community continues to grieve the senseless loss of Tyler Cardiel, an 18-year-old honor student whose life was tragically cut short on Christmas Day 2020. Cardiel, a recent high school graduate and part-time Circle K employee, was walking home from work when he was randomly shot and killed by Timothy Bell, now 35.

Bell, who was homeless at the time, admitted to targeting the first person he saw after saying he was “tired of sleeping on the street in the rain.” He had also stolen the handgun used in the murder just days earlier during an armed robbery. Bell pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to second-degree murder, armed robbery, and weapons misconduct and was sentenced to 49 years in state prison.

Prosecutors and community members have called the killing a senseless act that robbed a bright and promising young man of his future. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said, “This was a senseless and violent act that stole the future of a promising young man. While nothing can bring Tyler back, today’s sentence brings some measure of justice to his grieving family.”

In court, Tyler’s mother tearfully described her son as “kind-hearted” and said, “My son didn’t deserve this. He deserved to live.” Friends, classmates, and teachers remember Tyler for his intelligence, dedication, and the joy he brought to those around him.

Though justice has been served with the sentencing of Bell, the community continues to mourn Tyler Cardiel’s untimely death, honoring the memory of a young life filled with promise that was tragically stolen.
