NEDERLAND, Texas — A somber mood has settled over Nederland after authorities confirmed that 17-year-old Jose Manuel Banda, a student at Nederland High School, was killed Tuesday afternoon in a devastating crash along Highway 69.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the teen was struck by a dump truck at approximately 4 p.m. on Highway 69 North near Spurlock Road. Chief Donta Miller identified Banda as the victim and said investigators are still working to determine the events that led up to the collision.
The loss has deeply affected the school community. Officials with Nederland Independent School District stated that the high school principal has notified parents via email and informed families that counseling services will be made available to students and staff. District leaders are encouraging parents to keep a close eye on their children and seek support if they show signs of struggling with the news.
Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett has ordered an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
Highway 69 remained closed for several hours following the crash while authorities processed the scene. The roadway reopened shortly before 7 p.m. The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted deputies during the response.
As the investigation continues, friends, classmates, and teachers are left mourning a young life cut tragically short.
