Nesconset, NY — The Suffolk County community is reeling from a devastating tragedy in Nesconset, where Emily Finn, 18, a recent Sayville High School graduate and SUNY Oneonta freshman, was fatally shot on the morning of November 26, the day before Thanksgiving. Authorities report the incident as an apparent murder-suicide attempt involving her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend.
According to Suffolk County Police, Finn traveled to her ex’s home to return his belongings following a recent breakup. While there, she was allegedly shot by the teen, who then attempted to take his own life. Emily was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 17-year-old was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical but stable condition. Due to his age, his identity has not been released.
Emily was remembered by family, friends, and teachers as a bright and talented young woman with a warm, welcoming personality. A dedicated dancer, she studied ballet for over four years at the American Ballet Studio in Bayport and continued her passion for dance at SUNY Oneonta. She was pursuing a major in Early Childhood/Elementary Education and a minor in Dance, with dreams of becoming a teacher and making a difference in children’s lives.
Kathy Kairns-Scholz, artistic director at the American Ballet Studio, described Emily as “everything a parent would want in a child and teacher would want to have in their classroom,” emphasizing the tragedy of a young life full of potential cut short.
Emily Finn is survived by her parents, her brother, extended family, and countless friends whose lives she touched with her talent, warmth, and kindness. The incident has left the community grappling with grief, shock, and sorrow during what should have been a season of family celebration.
Authorities confirm that the 17-year-old suspect will face charges of second-degree murder and will be arraigned at a later date. The Suffolk County Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
Emily’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, a reminder of a life full of promise tragically lost far too soon.
