Lunenburg County, NS — The Crescent Beach and Bridgewater communities are mourning the tragic loss of Joel Curtis Hurtubise, 46, who passed away Thursday, November 27, 2025, following a motor vehicle accident in New Germany. Joel’s sudden death has left family, friends, and the many lives he touched in shock and profound grief.

Born in Scarborough, Ontario, Joel was the son of C. Joanne (Murray) Shadgett of Peterborough, Ontario, and David (Chari Keet) Hurtubise of British Columbia. He dedicated his life to serving others, both professionally and in his community. As a paramedic with Emergency Health Services (EHS) and a proud volunteer with the United Communities Fire Department, Joel’s compassion and courage helped countless individuals in times of need.

Beyond his service, Joel was deeply involved in his community. He sang in the choir at Bridgewater Baptist Church, coached youth basketball and football teams with the Park View Panthers, and shared his love of music as a former member of the Shorelines, a local band of paramedics and firefighters. Those who knew him remember him as generous, kind-hearted, and always ready to lend his time and talents to help others.

Joel is survived by his children, Naomi Grace Hurtubise and Rowan Levi Gordon Hurtubise; his former wife, Marissa Hurtubise; his parents, sisters, and brother; and a wide circle of extended family. His warmth, humor, and dedication to others leave a lasting imprint on all who were fortunate to know him.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Bridgewater Baptist Church, with private family burial at Brookside Cemetery. A reception at the church will follow for those wishing to celebrate Joel’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Bridgewater Baptist Church, the Salvation Army, or the United Communities Fire Department.

Joel Hurtubise’s legacy of service, music, mentorship, and community spirit will be remembered fondly, and his absence leaves a deep void in the hearts of many
