The NFL has lost one of its fiercest competitors and most iconic defenders. George Atkinson, the hard-hitting former Oakland Raiders safety who helped define the team’s identity in the 1970s, has died at the age of 78.
The Raiders announced Monday that Atkinson’s family informed the organization of his passing in Georgia. No cause of death has been released.
“George was the anchor of our legendary ‘Soul Patrol’ secondary — a fearless leader and a true Raider in every sense,” the team said in a statement. “His passion, intensity, and love for the game left an indelible mark on our history.”
A cornerstone of the Raiders’ defense from 1968 to 1977, Atkinson embodied the grit and swagger that made the Silver and Black a force of the era. As one-fourth of the famed “Soul Patrol,” alongside Willie Brown, Jack Tatum, and Skip Thomas, Atkinson helped guide Oakland to its first Super Bowl victory in the 1976 season — a defining moment for both the franchise and the city.
Known for his fearless tackling and intimidating presence, Atkinson struck fear in opposing receivers who dared to cross the middle. He finished his career with 30 interceptions, two touchdowns, and countless bruised opponents — though numbers alone can’t capture his impact on the game.
Beyond the field, Atkinson remained a devoted member of the Raiders family, serving as a broadcaster, mentor, and ambassador for decades after his playing days ended. His voice and insight became fixtures in the organization’s community outreach and alumni programs.
Atkinson’s life was not without hardship. In later years, he faced personal tragedy with the loss of both of his sons, yet he continued to speak openly about perseverance, fatherhood, and mental health — showing a depth of strength that went far beyond football.
For generations of Raider Nation, George Atkinson will always be remembered as the embodiment of what it meant to wear the Silver and Black: tough, loyal, and unyielding.
