NEW ORLEANS, LA — The Algiers community is reeling after a devastating act of violence claimed the life of 16-year-old Lizzell Palma, an honor roll student at Walter L. Cohen High School, who was fatally shot by her 20-year-old ex-boyfriend in an apparent murder-suicide early Tuesday morning.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, the tragic incident unfolded on October 22, 2025, in the 1800 block of Jo Ann Place, as Lizzell was reportedly on her way to school. Investigators say her ex-boyfriend confronted her in what appears to have been a targeted and premeditated attack. He fatally shot Lizzell before turning the gun on himself.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but despite life-saving efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the timeline and motive behind the horrific event, though early reports suggest it stemmed from anger and heartbreak following the end of their relationship.
Lizzell Palma was known by her teachers and classmates as a bright, motivated, and compassionate young woman — a student with a contagious smile and dreams of pursuing higher education. Her untimely death has sent shockwaves through the Walter L. Cohen school community, where grief counselors have been made available for students and staff.
