Lanett, Alabama -A community is mourning today following a devastating tragedy that claimed the life of a 19-month-old child in a hit-and-run Tuesday evening. Lanett Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal incident, which unfolded in the 400 block of South 4th Avenue just after 7 p.m.
According to Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain, emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes but were unable to save the child, who had sustained severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene, leaving behind grieving family members and shocked bystanders.
“It’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes our officers have had to respond to,” said Chief McCain. “No parent should ever have to endure this kind of loss.”
Overnight, investigators worked tirelessly, combing through surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. Their efforts, aided by tips from the community, quickly led them to identify a suspect vehicle. In cooperation with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office and LaFayette Police Department, authorities located the car and arrested 24-year-old Deanthony Wright of LaFayette early Wednesday morning.
Wright has been charged with vehicular homicide and remains in custody. Police have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision.
Chief McCain expressed deep gratitude to local residents and law enforcement partners for their swift assistance. “The community came together in an incredible way,” she said. “But this is a loss that will be felt for a long time.”
As the investigation continues, neighbors have begun placing flowers, stuffed animals, and candles at the site of the incident—a somber memorial to a life taken far too soon.
Authorities are asking anyone with additional information to come forward. Meanwhile, Chief McCain urged the public to keep the family of the young victim in their prayers.
“This child had their whole life ahead of them,” she said. “Our hearts are with their loved ones.”
