Boating Community Mourns the Loss of Legend Frank Hennigan

Charleston, WV — The Charleston community is enveloped in profound grief following the tragic passing of Max Arco Mastromichalis, a 16-year-old sophomore at George Washington High School, whose life was characterized by quiet determination, compassion, and a gentle spirit that left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Friends, classmates, and teachers describe Max as a young man who carried a rare calmness — someone who led not through loud words but through example. Whether on the soccer field, where he played with focus and humility, or in the classroom, where he was known for his thoughtful nature and willingness to help others, Max’s presence brought warmth and steadiness to those around him.
“Max was the kind of person who made you want to be better just by being near him,” said Coach Daniel Harper, who worked with Max on the junior varsity soccer team. “He didn’t have to say much. His kindness spoke for him.”
Teachers recall his respectful demeanor and quiet drive. “He approached every challenge with patience and grace,” said English teacher Laura Bennett. “He was an old soul — mature beyond his years, yet always smiling.”
Outside of school, Max was deeply devoted to his family and friends. He was often seen biking through the neighborhood, listening to music, or helping his younger cousins with their homework. Those closest to him say his laughter had a way of brightening even the dullest days.
As word of his passing spread, hundreds gathered at George Washington High School’s soccer field Monday evening for a candlelight vigil. Teammates placed flowers near the goalpost where Max once stood, while classmates shared stories through tears and embraces. The sound of quiet sobs mixed with whispered prayers as the community stood together, holding candles high against the autumn night.
“Max was our light,” said family friend Angela Marino. “It’s hard to understand why someone so good had to go so soon. But we’ll carry his light forward.”
A memorial service is being planned later this week, with details to be announced by the family. Counselors will be available at George Washington High School to support students and staff coping with the loss.
Though his time was heartbreakingly short, Max Arco Mastromichalis will be remembered not for the years he lived, but for the way he made others feel — seen, valued, and loved.
