Valencia, Venezuela — The baseball world is mourning tonight with the tragic news that former New York Yankee and Seattle Mariner catcher Jesús Montero has passed away at age 35, following complications from internal injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident two weeks ago.
Montero was critically injured when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on October 4 near Valencia. The collision left him with multiple fractures, severe damage to his lungs and organs, and other life-threatening injuries.
Despite emergency surgery and intensive care, doctors were unable to save him.
He succumbed to his injuries on October 19, 2025.
Montero’s baseball journey began in Venezuela, where he was signed by the Yankees as an international free agent in 2006.
He debuted in the Major Leagues in 2011 with New York, and later won acclaim as part of a blockbuster trade to Seattle in exchange for Michael Pineda.
Over his MLB career, Montero played in 226 games, posted a batting average of .253, hit 28 home runs, and drove in 104 runs.
Yet, Montero’s path was not without its challenges. At times, injuries, controversy, and performance fluctuations disrupted what many had projected would be a long and storied career.
Still, he remained a beloved figure in Venezuelan baseball circles and among fans who believed in his talent.
Today, tributes from across the baseball world are pouring in. Former teammates, coaches, fans, and sports commentators are remembering Montero not only for his raw talent and powerful bat, but for his spirited presence, his resilience, and the hope he always carried for a brighter tomorrow.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, former teammates, colleagues, and fans. May Jesús Montero rest in eternal peace — and may his memory continue to inspire all who followed his journey.
