Remembering Rochelle Luna and the Family Lost in the 1993 West Phoenix Tragedy

Phoenix, Ariz. — Twenty-five years ago, on September 14, 1993, the city of Phoenix awoke to one of the most horrific crimes in its history — the brutal murders of Albert Luna Sr., 46; his wife, Patricia, 40; their 17-year-old daughter, Rochelle; and 5-year-old son, Damien.
The killings, committed by Richard Djerf, a onetime friend of the family, shocked not only the West Phoenix community but the entire state of Arizona. The only surviving member of the Luna family was Albert Luna Jr., whose life was forever changed that day.
According to police reports, Djerf had meticulously planned the attack, driven by anger and resentment toward Albert Jr. for a previous dispute. What followed was an act of violence that left a permanent scar on all who knew the Lunas. Djerf later confessed to the murders and was convicted, but even justice could not heal the profound grief felt by those left behind.
Every year since, neighbors, classmates, and loved ones have remembered Rochelle Luna, a bright and kind young woman who attended Maryvale High School and was part of the Class of 1994. Friends describe her as joyful, compassionate, and full of promise — a young life stolen before it could truly begin.
In a moving tribute shared online, Marie Ang, a fellow alumna, wrote:
“Rochelle Luna, brutally murdered along with her father, mother, and 5-year-old brother Damien. One of the worst stories in West Phoenix, 1993. Such a horrible, heartbreaking tragedy. She will be forever remembered, and I pray for her brother Albert Jr., who survived this horrible crime. Rochelle is missed by many. I pray that all of you are in peaceful rest. Please know you touched our lives.”
Today, as the community reflects on that dark day, the memories of Rochelle, Damien, Patricia, and Albert Luna Sr. endure — reminders of the fragility of life and the enduring strength of those who carry on in their honor.
Though decades have passed, the Luna family’s story continues to echo in the hearts of West Phoenix residents — a painful chapter in local history, but one that will never be forgotten.
🕊️ May Rochelle, Damien, Patricia, and Albert Sr. rest in eternal peace.
