Questa Mourns the Loss of Officer Anthony Martinez After Tragic Motorcycle Crash

Questa, N.M. —The tight-knit community of Questa is in mourning following the devastating loss of Anthony Martinez, a respected off-duty police officer who was killed in a motorcycle accident Friday evening. Martinez, known for his dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to his hometown, was just 35 years old.
According to local authorities, the crash occurred along State Highway 38 near the edge of town. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, Martinez succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
“This is a tremendous loss for all of us,” said Questa Police Chief Daniel Romero. “Anthony wasn’t just a fellow officer — he was family. He served with honor, compassion, and deep pride in this community.”
Friends and neighbors describe Martinez as a man who carried his badge with humility and kindness. Outside his uniform, he was a devoted husband, father, and volunteer who often mentored local youth and participated in community safety programs.
Flags across Questa have been lowered to half-staff, and a memorial of flowers, candles, and handwritten notes has begun to form outside the police department.
A candlelight vigil is being planned for Sunday evening at Questa High School, where community members will gather to honor his memory and support his family during this difficult time.
“Anthony’s spirit will always be part of Questa,” said longtime resident Maria Lopez. “He protected us in life — now it’s our turn to keep his memory alive.”
