St. John’s University Mourns the Loss of Warren “Boz” Bostrom

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Deep sadness has fallen over the St. John’s University community as students, faculty, alumni, and friends mourn the passing of Warren “Boz” Bostrom, a beloved educator, mentor, and friend whose warmth, dedication, and spirit defined what it means to be a true Johnnie.
Boz passed away following a courageous battle with illness, surrounded by loved ones and colleagues who admired his strength and unshakable optimism. A proud 1995 graduate of St. John’s University, former Johnnie football player, and longtime professor of accounting and finance, Bostrom embodied the values of faith, community, and service that lie at the heart of the SJU tradition.
“Boz wasn’t just a teacher — he was a life-changer,” said Mark Vande Hei, fellow faculty member and longtime friend. “He cared deeply about his students, about helping them see their own potential, and about living with purpose. His impact will be felt for generations.”
Over his decades at St. John’s, Boz became a cornerstone of the university — known for his sharp intellect, compassionate leadership, and unwavering belief in the power of education. In the classroom, he was patient and approachable; outside it, he was a coach, mentor, and friend to all who needed one. His former students speak of him not only as an instructor but as a guide who helped them navigate both academics and life.
Whether cheering from the sidelines at Clemens Stadium, mentoring young athletes, or offering words of encouragement in passing, Boz represented everything that makes the Johnnie community special — humility, teamwork, kindness, and heart.
“He lived the Benedictine values every day — respect for all, a love of learning, and a deep sense of community,” said University President Brian Bruess. “Boz made St. John’s a better place, and all of us are better for having known him.”
As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from across the SJU and CSB communities. Former students shared stories of classroom moments that stayed with them long after graduation; colleagues spoke of his humor, integrity, and quiet leadership; and teammates remembered the grit and camaraderie he brought to the Johnnie football field.
A memorial service honoring Boz’s life and legacy will be held on the St. John’s University campus in the coming days. Details will be shared with the community once finalized.
While the campus grieves, the lessons and love that Warren “Boz” Bostrom gave so freely continue to echo through the halls he once walked and the lives he forever changed.
