JOHNSON COUNTY, Texas — A devastating tragedy struck the Johnson County community Tuesday evening when two young brothers, 4-year-old Banx McAmis and 7-year-old Bowyn Miller, drowned in the Brazos River near Hamm Creek Park.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to multiple 911 calls around 6:10 p.m. regarding possible drownings near the Bosque County line — a popular recreation spot known for its scenic river access. One of the calls came from the boys’ mother, who frantically reported that her sons had gone missing while playing near the water.
First responders from several agencies immediately launched a search. Despite their tireless efforts, both children were found unresponsive in the river. Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures, but the brothers were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have identified the victims as Bowyn Miller, age 7, a second-grade student at Plum Creek Elementary School, and his younger brother, 4-year-old Banx McAmis.
In a statement, the Joshua Independent School District expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its students. “We are heartbroken by this tragic loss,” the district said. “Bowyn was a bright, kind student who will be deeply missed by his classmates and teachers. Grief counselors are available to support our students and staff.”
Family members described Bowyn and Banx as joyful, inseparable brothers who brought endless laughter and love to those around them. Bowyn was known for his adventurous spirit and love of karate, video games, and outdoor play. Banx was remembered as a vibrant, energetic child who adored Ninja Turtles and was rarely seen without a smile.
“On the evening of October 7th, a true tragedy hit my family,” a relative wrote online. “My nephews, Bowyn and Banx, passed away. We are absolutely heartbroken.”
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident appears to be a tragic accident, with no evidence of foul play. The investigation remains ongoing.
“Our hearts are with this family as they face unimaginable loss,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, thanking first responders for their swift and compassionate efforts.
As news of the tragedy spread, an outpouring of grief and support flooded from the Joshua and Cleburne communities. Vigils and online tributes have been shared to honor the young brothers whose lives, though brief, touched so many.
Bowyn and Banx are survived by their loving parents, siblings, and an extended family forever changed by their loss.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a somber reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of water safety awareness, as a community mourns two little boys gone far too soon.
