FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville community is enveloped in grief following the tragic loss of Trevor Merritt, a beloved student and football player at E.E. Smith High School, who was among three young lives lost in a one-car crash early Monday morning on Rosehill Road. Trevor, known for his dedication, kindness, and infectious energy, leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Authorities confirmed that the accident occurred when a vehicle driven by an Army soldier lost control, resulting in a violent collision that claimed the lives of Trevor and two of his fellow teammates. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the magnitude of the crash was devastating. The driver survived and was transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment, as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Trevor was more than an athlete. Coaches, teammates, and classmates remember him as a young man of integrity, perseverance, and compassion — someone who inspired those around him both on the field and in the classroom. His leadership, warm spirit, and unwavering encouragement made him a cherished friend and teammate.
The Cumberland County Schools district has mobilized grief counselors to support students and staff, while classmates and community members have begun leaving heartfelt tributes at the school’s football field. Candlelight vigils and prayer circles are being held throughout Fayetteville, honoring the lives of Trevor and the other victims.
“Trevor had a light that touched everyone he met,” said a coach. “He lived with passion, kindness, and a drive to make those around him better. His memory will never fade.”
Though taken far too soon, Trevor Merritt’s spirit and legacy remain alive in the Golden Bull family and the Fayetteville community. His joy, dedication, and love for others will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Rest in peace, Trevor Merritt. You will forever remain in our hearts.
