SUMTER, S.C. — A tragic accident on McCrays Mill Road Friday evening claimed the life of 50-year-old cyclist Wesley McCray after he was struck by two vehicles in quick succession.
The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. near Cook Street, a familiar stretch for local commuters. Witnesses reported the collision to authorities, and emergency crews rushed to the scene. Despite their swift response, Coroner Robbie Baker confirmed McCray was pronounced dead at the site due to severe trauma sustained in the impact.
Both drivers involved remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement as investigators began piecing together the events leading to the fatal crash. No other injuries were reported. An autopsy has been scheduled in Charleston to further determine the cause of death.
The incident has left McCray’s family and the Sumter community devastated. Friends and neighbors remember him as a kindhearted man whose presence will be deeply missed. Expressions of sympathy have poured in as loved ones struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
