OTTAWA — The CHEO community is mourning the loss of Ruth Cull, who for more than 20 years was known to thousands of children, families, and staff as Molly Penny, the hospital’s therapeutic clown.
Cull’s family confirmed she passed away Sunday night. Before donning the red nose, Cull worked as an operating room nurse at CHEO and was among the first nurses to join the newly built children’s hospital. A clowning workshop later introduced her to what became a second career—one that would leave a lasting legacy of comfort and joy.
As Molly Penny, Cull became a beloved presence in the hospital’s halls, known for handing out stickers, running “Bored” meetings, offering playthings, and, most importantly, bringing laughter during difficult times. Families and staff alike credit her with being a source of strength and light when it was needed most.
“Ruth was one of the first nurses to join the newly built Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, working in the Operating Room. Later, she would become the heart of CHEO, known as ‘Molly Penny,’ the hospital’s therapeutic clown,” her son, Joseph Cull, told CTV News Ottawa. “With her infectious smile, quick wit and enormous heart, Molly brought joy to thousands of children and families during some of their most difficult times. For many, Molly Penny wasn’t just a character—she was a lifeline of laughter and hope.”
Molly Penny retired in September 2022 after more than two decades of service, though her impact remains deeply woven into the CHEO community.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
