BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A homicide investigation is underway after a fatal shooting on Huffman Road left one person dead and a community reeling late Thursday night.
According to Birmingham Police, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1000 block of Huffman Road, where they discovered a victim suffering from fatal injuries. Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures, but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity, pending notification of family.
Crime scene tape stretched across the busy roadway as detectives worked into the night, carefully marking evidence and canvassing the area for witnesses. Businesses and residents along Huffman Road watched with unease as police shut down portions of the street during the investigation.
At this time, investigators have not disclosed a possible motive, nor have they identified a suspect. It remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or a random act of violence.
For residents, the incident has sparked both grief and growing concern about public safety.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said one neighbor. “We hear about shootings across the city, but when it happens right here in our neighborhood, it feels personal. We just want answers and peace.”
The Birmingham Police Department’s homicide unit is urging anyone with information to come forward. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777, with cash rewards available for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
The killing adds to Birmingham’s rising homicide toll in 2025, a trend city leaders have called “deeply troubling” as they work alongside law enforcement and community organizations to curb gun violence.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say further updates — including the victim’s name and any suspect developments — will be shared as soon as they become available.
